Dante & Trish

Their Relationship

Dante and Trish are two main characters from Capcom's hit Playstation 2/3 video game series, Devil May Cry. Dante is the primary protagonist throughout the series (or at least in Devil May Cry, Devily May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3), and is a bounty hunter specializing in paranormal cases. Trish, a female demon, was introduced in Devil May Cry, and also appeared in Devil May Cry 2. The two develop a complex relationship that has been ambiguously but hintingly presented by Capcom, leaving it up to the fans to decide whether or not to characterize them as friends, business partners, lovers, or rivals.

Trish, who bears a great resemblance to Dante’s deceased mother Eva, is a creation of Mundus. As a result of her demonic nature she possesses several supernatural abilities, like superhuman strength and lightning powers. In the first game, she hires Dante to help stop Mundus' plan to conquer the human world by opening a gate to the demon world on Mallet Island. Later in the game Dante learns that she is a servant of Mundus, and that her resemblance to Eva was part of a plan to lure Dante to the island so that Mundus' servants can kill him. However, she develops feelings for Dante and helps him defeat Mundus. In the game's epilogue, she and Dante are shown working together as partners out of the renamed "Devil Never Cry" office. In the anime, she has since gone solo but sometimes reappears to work with Dante, who has given her an open invitation to come back at any time.

I was first introduced to Devil May Cry several months earlier, and I always loved any scene at all with Dante and Trish together. They are so similar to each other, though they would never admit it...both are stubborn, arrogant, strong, determined, intelligent, combative, attractive, and even compassionate.

When they first encounter each other, they seem like destined enemies. Trish tries to kill Dante and Dante returns the favor. Once, Dante saved Trish's life when he could have casually let her be killed and walk away, but he covered up his compassion with a harsh remark that he only saved Trish because she resembled his mother, and threatened her if their lives ever crossed again. But the two do meet each other many times, and in sharply contrasting situations...Trish betrays Dante once but another time she saves his life by giving him her energy to defeat Mundus. Once, when Trish was apparently "dead," Dante held her in his arms and poured out everything that he never would have told her when she was alive. As his voice breaks, he cries to the heavens, "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light!" I really cried my head off right then and there. However, I did my tearful fangirl wave and dance when Dante and Trish escaped the island at the very end and later become business partners in killing demons, Dante being the legendary dark knight and Trish his sidekick.
